See How the Toyota Corolla Cruises Past the Honda Civic & Hyundai Elantra.

Compact cars are respected for their fuel efficiency and smooth handling. The new Toyota Corolla epitomizes that. Williamsport drivers get an extensive suite of safety features, innovative technology, and a stylish cabin when they get behind the wheel of this fuel-efficient compact sedan.

While we're confident you'll choose the Toyota Corolla in the end, we understand our customers want to know the ins and outs of the Corolla and its competition. That's why Ciocca Toyota of Williamsport has compiled the research to see how the new Toyota Corolla fares against similar compact cars like the Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra.

Toyota Corolla vs Honda Civic

Unlike the Toyota Corolla, the Honda Civic has no hybrid model. The Honda Civic lags behind in technology. Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ are available but not standard on the base Honda Civic model, which only has a 5-inch touchscreen. You can upgrade to an available 7-inch display, but Williamsport drivers can get a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™ and Amazon Alexa as standard on the Toyota Corolla.

Both compact cars have similar safety features, with the Honda Civic featuring the Honda Sensing® safety suite as a standard feature on all Civic models. The Corolla rivals that safety package with a standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.0™ package. Each new Toyota Corolla is built with the Star Safety System™, which integrates advanced safety technologies.

Powertrains and fuel efficiency are similar. Base Toyota Corolla models earn 30/38 miles per gallon, with the 1.8-liter inline-4 engine that's rated for 139 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque. The Toyota Corolla's 2.0-liter inline-4 engine is stronger than the Civic's, producing 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. This Toyota Corolla powertrain earns 31/40 miles per gallon.

Toyota Corolla vs Hyundai Elantra

The Hyundai Elantra can't top the Toyota Corolla's advanced safety presence. While the Hyundai Elantra does provide lane-keeping assist, lane-follow assist, a driver attention monitor, active high-beam headlights, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection as standard safety features, there's no blind spot monitor until the highest trims. Williamsport drivers will feel safer behind the wheel of the Toyota Corolla and the compact car's Toyota Safety Sense 2.0™ standard safety suite, featuring:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Road Sign Assist

A Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is available on the Toyota Corolla. Also available is a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a JBL premium audio system. The Hyundai Elantra offers generic audio systems of four to six speakers on most models except for its premium model, which includes an 8-speaker Bose sound system.

The Hyundai Elantra has three powertrains: a 2.0-liter inline-4 engine rated for 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, a 1.6-liter inline-4 with a 32 kW electric motor producing 139 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, and a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine outputting 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. Most Hyundai Elantra models earn 33/43 miles per gallon.

The Toyota Corolla nearly matches those fuel economy ratings and has a more fuel-efficient hybrid model that's separate. The Toyota Corolla's 2.0-liter inline-4 engine producing 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque is stronger than the Elantra's version.
