The Hyundai Elantra can't top the Toyota Corolla's advanced safety presence. While the Hyundai Elantra does provide lane-keeping assist, lane-follow assist, a driver attention monitor, active high-beam headlights, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection as standard safety features, there's no blind spot monitor until the highest trims. The Hyundai Elantra has three powertrains: a 2.0-liter inline-4 engine rated for 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, a 1.6-liter inline-4 with a 32 kW electric motor producing 139 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, and a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine outputting 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. Most Hyundai Elantra models earn 33/43 miles per gallon.

The Toyota Corolla nearly matches those fuel economy ratings and has a more fuel-efficient hybrid model that's separate. The Toyota Corolla's 2.0-liter inline-4 engine producing 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque is stronger than the Elantra's version.
